The brief for the outdoor play space of this childcare centre was to provide a substantial tree canopy to replace a shade sail, a tricycle track, a raised vegetable garden, and ample play space for up to fifty toddlers and preschool age children.

Any planting for this children’s garden was to be robust, non-toxic, low allergy, tactile but not spiky, and preferably Australian. The sandpit around the existing pirate ship was relocated, and the pirate ship resurfaced in blue, to support creative play. The new space boasts a sandpit with a luxury mud kitchen, and a treehouse to offer new perspectives and encourage investigation of the tree canopy. A perimeter hedge will focus children into the playground, and provide a green canvas for nature play.
